Layla, a twelve-year-old game designer, stands out among her peers in the class of 2024. She joined TechTrain alongside her younger sister, Sydney, and eagerly plunged into the exciting world of game development. Throughout her journey, she embraced challenges and picked up new skills, all while focusing on personal growth. For Layla, this adventure is not just about learning, it's a source of fun and inspiration.

From learning new skills

The moment Layla stepped into the world of tech, she was ready to roll up her sleeves and get things done. “I learned how to gain points, manage inventory, and set health points for characters,” she shared. These aren't just random skills, they form the building blocks of her in creating awesome games. 

To overcome challenges along the way

Of course, not every adventure goes without its bumps in the road. There were at least some challenges for Layla while she was learning to navigate the complexities of game design. At first, the technical aspect felt a bit overwhelming. “When I started, I didn’t know anything,” she admitted. But instead of letting the frustration get the best of her, Layla chooses to face the problems with determination.

More than just creating games, it helps Layla get better at school

She never imagined that learning about X and Y coordinates for game design turned out to be a game changer for her performance at school.

When kids learn digital skills, be it game design, coding, digital literacy, or digital design, they are learning about the foundation of problem-solving and critical thinking. For instance, game design teaches them to break complex tasks into manageable steps, which is valuable for learning math and science. They learn to think critically about game mechanics, which enhances their analytical skills.  Plus, creating narratives and characters helps with their creativity and writing skills, which in turn makes them more interested in language arts. 

Growing as a person

“I have learned a lot and gained so many ideas for making games,” she shared with a big smile. This new knowledge has given her confidence and the ability to feel capable. “I enjoy it, and it makes me feel ready to make a game by myself,” she proudly said. 

It’s heartwarming to see how she’s blossomed. A combination of skill-building, encouragement from her teachers, and her own determination has transformed Layla into a promising achiever, if not a game designer, then certainly one with the brightest future ahead.
